Earlier this year, 26417 people called on the European Commission to
"Guarantee Public Access To Publicly-Funded Research Results Shortly After
Publication" (http://www.ec-petition.eu/ ).

The Commission replied that "scientific publishing will be a priority on the
agenda of the Portuguese Presidency". http://tinyurl.com/2mucws or long url

And indeed Portugal is organising a series of meetings on research and
competitiveness. All take place in Lisbon, before the end of the year (see
list below). Many of these meetings seem likely to touch on the subject of
Public Access To Results Of Publicly Funded Research.

One meeting has already taken place** but I cant find any reports. If you,
dear reader, attend one of these meetings, it would be nice if you could
post a report here.

Or should EU citizens just forget the whole business? It looks as though our
representatives in the European Parliament have done just that.
"Officialisation of procedure in the European Parliament" has been "pending"
since February 2007; http://tinyurl.com/388roo or long url
