    Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Award

    In July 2015 I was awarded a Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Award for innovative and high-quality teaching. The citation for the award read: "Dr Jonathon Hare has taken a pioneering approach to the design and delivery of modules on which he teaches. By using appropriate technologies and processes, he has enabled those who he teaches to track changes that are made to the teaching materials and easily collaborate and feedback on the design of the teaching resources. This approach also allows students to make changes to the teaching materials and interactive code examples, in a way that can be managed by the lecturer. Jonathon has demonstrated an outstanding level of rigour and technical proficiency in the creation and management of teaching materials for multiple modules on which he has taught."

    Vice-Chancellor's Award

    Over a period of 6 months in 2013, I co-led a team of staff and students building Erica the Rhino. Erica was part of a public art display located around Southampton city centre for a period of 14 weeks over the summer of 2013. During the exhibition Erica interacted with hundreds of members of the public, and we ran regular workshops for children which demonstrated how Erica worked internally. In 2014, our outreach work centred around Erica was recognised by a Southampton University Vice Chancellor's award.

    Southampton University Students Union Excellence in Teaching Award

    In May 2014 I was the faculty winner of the 2014 Southampton University Students Union Excellence in Teaching Awards in the innovative teaching category (for an innovative approach to teaching Computer Vision using heavily interactive slides built with our OpenIMAJ software). I was additionally nominated in the outstanding lecturer category.

    ACM Multimedia Open Source Software Competition Winner

    In November 2011 my colleagues and I won the prestigious ACM Multimedia Open Source Software Competition with our OpenIMAJ and ImageTerrier software. OpenIMAJ is a set of software libraries for scalable multimedia analysis and computer vision that lies underneath all my research, and is additionally used in teaching at Southampton.

    ISWC 2009 Linked-data-a-thon Winner
    image
    Whilst at the 2011 International Semantic Web Conference in northern Virginia, I took part in the Linked-data-a-thon competition and built novel web search system that used semantic web technologies and linked data to diversify search results. The system was designed and built in under 48 hours and was awarded the second place prize.
