Workshop on recent advances in modelling spatio-temporal data

University of Southampton, UK

Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26, 2005.

The Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) has organised this two day workshop. The central theme of the workshop is statistical modelling of data covarying in space and time. There are no limits on the application areas as long as the data are spatio-temporal and the model includes elements that accommodate both spatial and temporal dependencies.
Post-workshop News:

  1. Upcoming similar workshops/conferences elsewhere in 2006: (1) 6th French-Danish Workshop on Spatial Statistics and Image Analysis in Biology, May 14--18, 2006. (2) International Workshop on Spatio-Temporal Modelling (METMA3), to be held in Pamplona, Spain, the 27th, 28th and 29th of September 2006.
  2. The abstract book is online.
  3. You can read a review paper: Recent Trends in Modeling Spatio-Temporal Data written by Sujit Sahu and Kanti Mardia.
  4. Peter Diggle has provided these notes from the roundtable meetings he chaired.
  5. Chris Glasbey and Paul Blackwell have provided these notes from the roundtable meetings they chaired.

Some selected comments:

  • A very strong speaker list and a nice range of modelling and application presentations re last question not really my area, but useful later on. Attended to learn about a new area.
  • The workshop was really good and I think small focussed workshops of this kind are much better places to exchange ideas that big conferences, where some people (specially PhD students and younger staff) may find it harder to interact with others. I think it's very important that this kind of events continue to happen and receive funding. Many thanks to all the organisers for a brilliant job.
  • Ideally workshop meeting like this should include more opportunities for informal discussion. But this is just a minor comment on what was overall a very well organised and interesting meeting.
