Talk to a Careers Adviser
Individual Advice and Guidance - Important changes from September 1st 2011
With effect from the 1st September 2011, Career Destinations will no longer be routinely offering 1:1 appointments to students (*exceptions outlined below). This is because we strongly believe in the power of learning through colleagues in a group environment, in order to share experiences and knowledge.
We will be offering a wide range of high quality services that will enable you to make a successful transition into graduate employment or further study. Our expectation is that the variety of events and workshops, along with our comprehensive website and resources within the Career Destinations centre, will provide students with the help that they need in order to make appropriate career choices and gain the assistance necessary to prepare for demanding selection processes. We continue to work closely with the Faculties to provide Careers related skill sessions within the study timetable in addition to our centrally held events.
As a student, we encourage you to visit Career Destinations and make use of:
- Take-away handouts on career-related topics (e.g. examples of CVs, how to write a personal profile etc)
- Free magazines and leaflets by employment sector
- Browse or borrow a book on a three-day loan basis from the Careers Information Centre
- Access our web resources from anywhere or come in and use our computer workstations
Enhanced Web Resources
Our website continues to develop and provides excellent self help resources:
- Our Student Portal promoting the latest job and internship vacancies
- Online psychometric tests to help you gain valuable exerience of tests used at interviews
- Up-to-date careers information on a wide range of occupations
- Video resources on all aspects of the graduate job seeking process
- Examples of CVs and cover letters
- Access to careers guidance tools including Prospects Planner and Adult Directions
Community Volunteering, Enterprise and Graduate Passport
We also support you to develop your skills through Community Volunteering and Enterprise activities, which cover opportunities from care work to conservation. We will help you to develop skills which will enable you to complete the Graduate Passport, an achievement record that recognises and rewards involvement in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
Excel Southampton Placement Programme
Work experience during your degree has never been more crucial to securing graduate employment, and Career Destinations runs the Excel Southampton placement programme, offering students the opportunity to gain paid work experience outside term time. Excel Southampton provides work opportunities ranging from 4 to 12 weeks with employers nationwide, as well as working within our eight Faculties.
Careers Events
For full details on forthcoming careers events, from Speed Networking to Boot Camps to CV workshops with both Career Practioners and leading graduate recruiters, please access our student portal where you can view a listing of events and book your place online for most sessions.
*We recognise that in some circumstances students may face additional obstacles when entering the graduate job market, therefore students are entitled to a 1:1 half hour appointment with a Career Practitioner (up to a maximum of 2 appointments per academic year) , if they meet one of the following criteria:
1. If a student has a declared health condition, specific learning difficulty or a disability.
We work closely with our Enabling Services colleagues and are committed to supporting students who inform the University that they have a disability by offering individual advice and guidance when required.
2. If a student is intending to leave their course of study prematurely.
If you are a student who falls within one of the above eligible criteria for a 1:1 half hour appointment with a Career Practitioner, then please either ring Career Destinations +44 (0)23 8059 3501 (between 9.00am-5.30pm Mon-Fri, 9.00am-3.30pm Wednesdays) or book in person at Career Destinations.
