Placements & internships
These offer structured work experience often with a focus on a specific project. Opportunities are now available from 8 weeks to year-long schemes. Many are targeted at penultimate year students but increasingly opportunities exist for new graduates. Those offered by large companies are highly competitive and require early application (autumn term for the following summer).
The Shell Step scheme offers summer placements in small and medium sized enterprises where projects can range from implementing IT systems to writing a marketing plan.
National Knowledge Transfer Partnership vacancies
Opportunities for recently qualified graduates (Bachelor, Masters or PhD) to work managing challenging projects central to the development needs of participating companies.
Negotiated sandwich placements
You may be able to negotiate a sandwich placement, where students take 6 to 12 months out of their degree between penultimate and final year. Ask your department about available programmes in your sector.

FAST- TRACK offers one year industrial placements for disabled people and includes training in personal development skills as well as work experience in partner organisations.
