There are a broad variety of opportunities available to students studying history. Employers particularly value the employability skills that are acquired from a history degree; it is widely accepted as a rigorous academic discipline. These skills include:
- critical reasoning and analytical skills, the ability to solve problems and think creatively
- Intellectual competency and the ability to think flexibly
- The capability to conduct research using a variety of different tools e.g. information, technology and historical sources
- the ability to construct an argument by identifying appropriate evidence and communicating the findings in a clear and structured format, both in writing and in speaking
- Negotiation and questioning skills, as well as the ability to summarise coherently.
- Self-motivation and the ability to work independently, applying good time management and prioritisation.
- A capacity to engage in teamwork, accommodating different ideas, taking into account people’ opinions and making decisions.
- The ability to take an objective and open-minded approach to problem-solving, when faced with arguments and hypotheses
- A knowledge of social reactions and relations i.e. how factors influence groups and individuals
