Training and Development for Volunteers

Training and development is a key part of volunteering.  We offer training and development sessions to help ensure that you are not only well prepared for your placement, but that you are also able understand and articulate what you’ve gained from the experience.

Introduction to Community Volunteering

These sessions are open to everyone.

If you aren't sure what to expect from volunteering and want to know more about what volunteering is and what opportunities are available to you then there are a number of 'Introduction to Community Volunteering' sessions being run by Career Destinations.  These occur periodically throughout the year and you do not have to be registered with Community Volunteering in order to attend.  The slides from the session can be downloaded from this web page.

General Training

Attendance at a General Training Session is compulsory for all Volunteers.

Everyone attending a General Training session should already be registered with Community Volunteering.  You can do this at:

http://cv.susu.org

When you register with Community Volunteering you will be sent an email inviting you to sign up for a General Training session.  This training session will go over the policies and procedures you will need to be aware of, discuss any concerns you have, give you a chance to start to recognise what skills you will be developing through your volunteering and identify three main things you want to have achieved at the end of your placement.  The slides from this session can be downloaded from this website but attendance is compulsory for all volunteers.

Spaces are limited at the sessions and all volunteers must attend a session so please sign up in advance. Please log onto the Career Destinations Student Portal and use the 'Events' tab to book your space.  If you are a member of staff and cannot access this then please email us on volunteering@soton.ac.uk to book your space.

Reflection sessions

These optional sessions are open to everyone volunteering through Community Volunteering.

They are a great opportunity for you to reflect on what you’ve gained from your experience, talk about whether your placement is giving you what you wanted, discuss opportunities for moving forward with your volunteering, and tell us how we can improve what we’re doing.  We don't have any plans to run sessions in the near future, but if you're interested please contact volunteering@soton.ac.uk and we'll look at arranging a session.
