Edwina was the elder of the two daughters of Wilfrid Ashley, Baron Mount Temple of Lee and his first wife, Amalia (Maudie), only child of Sir Ernest Cassel, financier and philanthropist. Edward VII, Edwina's grandfather's friend and client, was her godfather.
