Understanding Animal Research (UAR) has awarded the University of Southampton Leader in Openness status (2026–2029). The award recognises our outstanding commitment to transparency in the use of animals in scientific research.
The award is part of the Concordat on Openness on Animal Research in the UK. The sector-wide initiative encourages organisations to be clear about when, how and why animals are used in research. The University of Southampton is one of only five organisations awarded this status for 2026–2029. It reflects the progress we've made embedding openness across our research community and communications.
Professor Mark Spearing, Establishment Licence Holder at the University of Southampton, said:

Animal use underpins a significant fraction of our research in medicine and the life sciences as well as to our work to ensure we make wise choices in preserving habitats and ecosystems for animals in the wild.
