On the 20th of July 2023, the University of Southampton AWERB led a workshop event to explore and define the Culture of Care at the university. The report from this workshop can be found linked below for reading.

Dr Penny Hawkins (an external lay member of the university’s AWERB) and Marine Barnabé from the RSPCA Animals in Science Department supported the university in planning and running this workshop. We intend to hold future events to advance and develop the Culture of Care at Southampton for staff, students and most important the animals used in our research.
On the 8th of September 2025, the University of Southampton AWERB led another Culture of Care workshop. This session was focussed on recognising, understanding and supporting the animal-human relationship.

Dr Penny Hawkins (an external expert lay member of our AWERB) and their colleague Ellie Muscat from the RSPCA Animals in Science Department supported the university again in planning and facilitating this workshop. Another workshop has agreed to be held in a further two years time.
