Our Schools Activities

Hands-On Science for All Key Stages

We offer a range of activities designed to engage students from Key Stage 2 through Key Stage 5, tailored to curriculum needs and delivered by experienced outreach specialists.

What we offer

•    Key Stage 2 (Years 5–6): Fun, interactive sessions introducing basic chemical principles and sustainability themes.
•    Key Stage 3 & 4 (Years 8–10): Demonstrations and workshops that enrich the chemistry curriculum and inspire future study (for example Spectroscopy in a suitcase).
•    Key Stage 5 (Years 12–13): Twilight Practical Sessions and Work Shadowing Days in our state-of-the-art labs.

Twilight Practicals run every year around June, registrations open 6 months before.
Spectroscopy in a suitcase comes into schools on request.
Our Work Shadowing program runs every summer.
We also work with Salters' Institute to deliver discovery days.

Past Highlights

•    Chemistry in Action Days: Over 500 students attended events exploring chemical reactions and materials science.
•    Lockdown Outreach Kits: Distributed to schools to keep practical science alive during remote learning.

Booking Information

Teachers can request sessions via ChemistryOutreach@soton.ac.uk. We also maintain a mailing list for updates on new activities.
