On 19th December 2018, the eight-week Autumn Chinese Evening School was completed successfully. The Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton run the whole course at the Avenue Campus.

This evening school had two courses - Calligraphy Interest and Chinese Language. The tutors were An Puxuan, CI volunteer and Yang Sang Siqi, CI teacher. The attendees were mainly students and staff from the faculties at the University.

The calligraphy interest course introduced attendees to the historical origins of Chinese traditional calligraphy, the basic principles of calligraphy ,and how to write simple Chinese characters. At the end of the course, students were able to write a Christmas card in Chinese and  sign it with their own Chinese names as a finished product.

The Chinese Language course focused on communication needs, covering topics such as self-introduction, nationality, numbers and time, ordering food and drink and shopping. Through eight weeks of study, the students learned basic practical daily expressions, which were practiced and further developed through practical dialogues and role-play scenarios.

Although the evening classes only ran for a limited amount of time, most of the students who attended all the classes said that they have learned a lot. The CI plans to hold more new courses in 2019 to better meet the needs of teachers, students and the public.
