The Online Chinese New Year Event 2021

On 10th February 2021, at 11AM GMT, The Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Southampton and the Modern Languages and Linguistics department of Southampton University hosted a joint online Spring Festival celebration to welcome the year of Ox. More than 240 people attended the event

To begin, Professor Alex Neil, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, Dr. Zheng Ying, Director of the CI, and Professor Michael Ng, President of the Chinese Association in Southampton, expressed their New Year’s wishes to everyone. The event was divided into three parts. The first part entailed a Chinese painting show and an Erhu performance, the second part comprised of traditional Chinese skills performances and the third part consisted of New Year’s wishes given by students from three CI classrooms: Steiner Academy, Bohunt Liphook and Bohunt School Worthing. As well as these performances, the CI also hosted quiz segments to add to the festive atmosphere. Participants joined in using Microsoft Teams and WeChat. This online event aimed to deliver best wishes to everyone and welcome a promising new year.
