CI hold the Fifth Lunchtime Forum
On 30th June 2022, CI held the fifth lunchtime webinar -- The international rise of Chinese fashion designers: a window into a changing China, which was given by Dr Mike Bastin, Programme leader on the MA Fashion Marketing and Branding programme at the University of Southampton’s Winchester School of Art (WSA). CI’s core teacher, Ms. Ying Fu, hosted this forum.
After a brief introduction on his background, Dr Mike Bastin explained the two Chinese elements used a lot: tangible elements such as flowers, animals, mountains and intangible elements such as poetry, art and literature. Then, Dr Mike Bastin gave the audiences some examples to show how Chinese fashion designers use these elements in their designs, and the rise influence in the international fashion field. During the speech, Dr Mike Bastin invited the audience to give their insights on these designs. After the speech, Dr Mike Bastin also had a lively discussion with the audience.
Dr Mike Bastin has lived in China for seven years and has a deep understanding of Chinese culture. He hopes that in the future, Chinese fashion designers can use more and more subtleness, blended with Western aesthetic and greater use of regional Chinese elements to have a broader influence in the fashion world.
