Economic Impact

The University's contribution to the Southampton community encompasses education, outreach, business and enterprise, employment, student volunteering, sports and the arts, highly qualified students and graduates, and the use of many of our campus facilities.

The work of Southampton researchers, which has been changing the world for the better over the past six decades, continues to benefit society both locally and around the world. Our wide portfolio of research achievements ranges from significant medical advances, to the technology that underpins the internet.

In an independent economic impact assessment report, published in 2018, the authors estimated that the University of Southampton annually supports economic activity in Southampton of £0.9 billion and 14,000 jobs. For the regional area the figure is £1.3 billion and 19,800 jobs; and for the UK it is £2.5 billion and 32,900 jobs.
