The University of Southampton

Economic Impact

The University's contribution to the Southampton community encompasses education, outreach, business and enterprise, employment, student volunteering, sports and the arts, highly qualified students and graduates, and the use of many of our campus facilities.

The work of Southampton researchers, which has been changing the world for the better over the past six decades, continues to benefit society both locally and around the world. Our wide portfolio of research achievements ranges from significant medical advances, to the technology that underpins the internet.

In an independent economic impact assessment report, published in 2022, the authors estimated that the University of Southampton contributes £4.14 billion to the UK economy every year. For every pound spent by the University, £7.40 was generated in economic benefit. Approximately £1.6 billion of this economic impact occurs in the South-East, with a very significant proportion occurring within Southampton itself. The University also contributes £69 million to Southampton’s tourism industry, coming from approximately 23,000 study trips, business meetings and visits to see friends and family.
