Several international business studies have found that the internationalization of firms is a gradual process, with successful new exporters contributing to a large share of medium- and long-term export growth.

This paper examines whether the dynamics of new exporters differ when they are multinational companies (MNCs) and ’born-global’ firms (BGs). Previous work finds that MNCs and BGs account for a large share of exports by new exporters, and suggests that their entry, growth and exit behavior resembles that of experienced exporters (Blum et al., 2020). To analyze the export strategy of MNCs and BGs, we exploit disaggregated and comprehensive data on French exporters between 1993 and 2006. We find that MNC and BG new exporters, like other new exporters, start small, grow fast, and exit more at the beginning of each firm-product-destination spell. In addition, age dependence is more pronounced in initial spells, and successful new exporters are more likely to expand early into new markets, suggesting dynamic complementarities in export entry decisions.
