Event details
How does a system explode? Brazil is amidst an historical shift; its prison system is growing exponentially where prisons have figured marginally in the past. There are many reasons this should not be: prisons hold no remedy, they are replete with crises, most people are there for non-violent offences, and they anchor an ever more lopsided social policy. The exponential trend line of system expansion is not smooth, however. In everyday life it is punctuated by efforts, events, and axiomatic evidence -‘everyone knows’- that it must be stopped. And yet, as I will discuss and reflect upon, too many efforts to wall off the prison system to further growth all to commonly lead to widening its doorways.
