Success in the Universities Business Challenge

Student teams from Engineering and the Environment have had another successful year in this year’s Universities Business Challenge (UBC).

The UBC is the premier UK business simulation competition with teams from Universities across the UK competing against each other. It offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to improve their knowledge of business putting their theory into practice and developing skills in team-working and leadership.

Semi-finalists

Two teams of second year undergraduate students were entered into the competition from Engineering and the Environment.

Elynn Suah Ee Huei, Lawrence Pang, Barnaby Abbott,  Danial Tariq and Maria Khan reached the semi-finals held at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Team Leader Barnaby Abbott, comments: "The UBC has broadened my insight into the business environment and developed my team working skills in an analytical manner."

Finalists

Our second team made it through to the finals held at IBM, Southbank London. Headed by Andreea Nae, the team included Noorvir Aulakh, Mark Hall, David Aggus and Oliver Hampden Martin. Oliver was unable to attend the final but played his part in helping to ensure the teams success.

Andreea comments: "The UBC taught me to tackle with confidence business problems, working under pressure in a team that became more adaptable, dedicated and forward thinking along the way."

Noorvir adds: "The UBC is a great team building experience" and Oliver Hampden-Martin  said " The UBC is a fantastic opportunity to develop your decision making in a fun environment".

Mark summarised the experience commenting: "A great place to learn better team working skills, and becoming more confident in a decision-making position where a lot of pressure is put on you to perform well".

310 teams from universities and colleges across the UK took part in the challenge, competing to achieve maximum profit, acquire new business and enhance customer satisfaction.

Associate Dean for Enterprise, Professor Simon Cox  comments:  "Our engineering teams have applied their entrepreneurial and business skills and have competed hard to represent University of Southampton in this competition - well done for a superb performance."

Dr Anna Barney, Associate Dean for Education adds "Another strong performance from our Engineering and Environment teams in this very competitive event. Getting to the semi-final is a real achievement; getting to the final is exceptionally good and coming half way up the finals leader board - fantastic! Well done to both teams."
