Abstract:
In order to ensure the safety of towing operation, it is important to understand the motion characteristics of tow and towed ships and the tension behaviour during towing in waves. In this talk, I will present the practical simulation method for wave-induced motions of tow and towed ships in regular seas and also discuss those motion characteristics in waves theoretically and experimentally. The present method can calculate those motions and tension in time domain. To validate the present method, the towing tank tests were carried out in various wave lengths and directions. As a result, we found that, although there is some room for improvement, the present method can roughly capture those wave-induced motions and tension behaviour during towing in regular seas. This talk is based on my PhD thesis.

Dr Yoshiyuki Nakayama , Japan Coast Guard Academy. Yoshiyuki Nakayama is a lecturer of Japan Coast Guard Academy. Now, he is a one-year visiting academic in Fluid Structure Interaction group, Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, University of Southampton. His principal research interests are in ship towing system, ship to ship interaction, and ship manoeuvrability. A current focus at University of Southampton is in application of CFD technique to ship to ship interaction in close proximity. He received a Master degree (March, 2010) and PhD (March, 2013) in Engineering from Hiroshima University in Japan. Previously, he worked as a 3rd navigation officer of a patrol vessel of Japan Coast Guard and performed the duties such as rescuing people, crime control at sea and protecting marine environment.
