Project Title:
Nearfield Acoustics of Advanced Open Rotors

Supervisors:
Dr M Kingan, Dr R Self

Industrial Supervisors:
Dr A Parry

Sponsored by Rolls-Royce and EPSRC.

Research project

If novel aircraft engines concepts such as the Advanced Open Rotor are to be accepted for commercial use, they will have to be in accordance with increasingly stringent noise regulations. The noise assessment of such engines can be complex, especially when considering the unpredictability in operating conditions and interaction effects upon engine installation. The main focus of this project is to develop a method of predicting the sound field in close proximity to an Advanced Open Rotor. This will provide insight into the significance of various sources of noise from the engine. The work can be extended to assess installation effects and used to verify existing open rotor noise models or experimental data.
