Research project: Experimental and analytical techniques for the assessment of in vitro implant migration in polymer foam models

Early migration of implants has been hypothesised by many as a predictor for failure by aseptic loosening. This project combined experimental and numerical methods in an attempt to develop pre-clinical tools for understanding and assessing implant migration, using a polymer foam material as an analogue for cancellous bone.

Fatigue testing was used to assess the suitability of this material substitute. Finite element methods with continuum damage models were used to quantify the fatigue/migration simulation. It was shown that in many cases an analysis of the numerical stress and strain fields could be used to predict the ‘life’ of the implant-substrate complex under uniaxial loading.
