Jacob wins McDonald's Top Employee Prize

Published: 22 March 2010

Jacob Collings, 2nd year Undergraduate Human Geography student, is delighted that he has been awarded McDonald's employer of the year 2009. Over an 8 month competitive process he overcame the competition to be crowned the winner in the final last week in London.

As Jacob explains: "My job at McDonald's is as a Shift Manager for a local franchisee who owns 9 stores across the south. I manage shifts on a daily basis as well as doing such tasks as hiring/discipline, employee scheduling and training".

"The competition was a long process (8 months) which began with a nomination for the employee of the quarter for the local region back in August 2009. I then won more and more heats involving panel interviews, group discussions and job observation until I made the final in March, with the top 4 employees in the UK! I then won this and was awarded McDonald's UK employee of the year 2009, from an employee base of over 85,000!"

Many students these days combine their studies with part-time employment. Jacob is one of these students and he recognises both the financial benefits of juggling paid-employment with his studies along with the development of a range of management and business skills.

"Working part time for McDonalds whilst studying has not only given me financial benefits, I have also developed skills such as management, business acumen and professionalism, whilst progressing well within the company AND still achieving good marks with my degree. It is hard, challenging work that does fill a lot of my time, but I love being busy and will soon reap the rewards coming out of University with a good position in a global company, as well as a degree in Human Geography."
