The University of Southampton is opening its doors this year to students from around the world. A unique International Summer School will introduce them to the best of British culture with classes in English Literature, Film Studies, History and Music, visits to historic places and vibrant cities including London and Bath and organised social events.

Among the themes to be studied will be British film and music, the life and works of Shakespeare and Jane Austen, the history of sport, regional archaeology and insights into castles, cathedrals and country houses in England. Southampton’s long association with the sea will also be covered including, of course, the story of the ill-fated luxury liner Titanic.

A programme of visits will complement the classroom sessions. This summer they may include Stonehenge, London, Bath, Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard and the Isle of Wight.

Accommodation will be provided in the University’s halls of residence and most meals are also included. Students arriving at Heathrow Airport for the four week programme will be met and escorted to Southampton, then dropped back there at the end of the Summer School.

The University of Southampton welcomes international students. Around four thousand from more than 100 countries are already studying here, combining study at one of the UK’s leading universities with the opportunity to experience life in another culture and make friends from around the world.
