Conference: New light on archaeological ceramics

The 'Insight from Innovation: New Light on Archaeological Ceramics' conference was held at the Department of Archaeology, University of Southampton 19-21 October 2012, in recognition of contributions to the field by Professor David Peacock.

The greatly successful event brought together specialists of recent techniques and new perspectives applied to archaeological ceramics. Many contributions were strongly interdisciplinary, involving concepts or techniques from fields such as chemistry, design studies, ethnography, engineering, computing, and contemporary craft.

The conference also featured an unprecedented joint contribution by the Prehistoric Ceramics Research Group, the Study Group for Roman Pottery, and the Medieval Pottery Research Group. This paper was designed to assess the trajectory of ceramic studies in British archaeology and concerns and potentials for future research.

The event was organised by Sarah Coxon, Emilie Sibbesson, Ben Jervis, and Pina Franco of the Southampton Ceramics Research Group, based in the Department of Archaeology.
