S3RI welcomes new EPSRC fellow

Published: 5 March 2010

Dr Alex Dolia has joined the statistics community at Southampton on a new type of EPSRC research fellowship.

Dr Dolia will be working for three years on new methods of designing experiments to obtain data that change over space and time, such as from environmental monitoring of air and noise pollutants, and measurement of the temperature and salinity levels of oceans.

His three year appointment is the result of a Mathematical Sciences Programme initiative aimed to increase UK statistics research capacity by drawing in researchers in other disciplines who want to pursue a research career in statistics.

Alex joins Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) from Electronics and Computer Science where his previous work in machine intelligence fits well with his new research area. Professor Sue Lewis, Director of S3RI, commented "We are delighted to have won one of the five awards made by EPSRC. This scheme is likely to be repeated in the future, and we hope that other early career researchers will be able take advantage of the opportunity".
