CORMSIS MSc students from Mathematical Sciences have been recognised for their achievements in problem solving.

They were awarded prizes at a special celebration lunch for the quality and impact of their summer projects at leading companies and organisations. They include Airbus, Babcock, Deloitte, Heathrow Airport, TSYS, Virgin Atlantic Airways and the NHS. Boeing attended the event and sponsored two prizes for the top students.

All seven of the MSc degrees offered by the University’s Centre for Operational Research, Management Sciences and Information Systems (CORMSIS) offer an opportunity to compete for a three-month practical assignment to solve a real-world problem.

MSc Operational Research student Joe Bampton completed his three-month project at Babcock. “My CORMSIS MSc summer project with Babcock was the highlight of my degree. Babcock deliver training to the military. I carried out a predictive analysis of how the students were progressing and whether they were likely to pass or fail their exams. I created a model using Machine Learning to identify and support potentially struggling students. It was a great way to use my skills and I’m now working for Babcock.”

Dr Christine Currie, Associate Professor of Operational Research, is Director of CORMSIS - a partnership between Southampton Business School and Mathematics. She says: “This event is a highlight of our year. Hearing how our students have used their skills and knowledge to make a difference is always inspirational. Many of their sponsor companies and academic supervisors are here today to congratulate them on this great start to their careers.”

CORMSIS welcomes approaches from companies and organisations in the UK and internationally with projects to offer talented students. They should contact Julie Hickman or Peter Becque at cormsis@southampton.ac.uk.
