Citation for the May Hicks Awards 2020

Joseph Bampton, who studied for MSc Operational Research at the University of Southampton, has just been awarded the 2020 OR Society May Hicks prize of £1000 for the Best Postgraduate Project in Operational Research in the UK. The OR Society funds annual awards for student projects from a generous bequest from the estate of Mrs May Hicks, wife of Donald Hicks OBE, a major contributor to Operational Research and the first treasurer of The OR Society. The projects entered for the award are Operational Research projects carried out for a client organisation rather than within the university.

Winner:

Joseph Bampton

Joseph’s project was titled "Training Optimisation and Learner Assessment through Data Exploitation" and was carried out with Babcock Ltd. Joseph’s solution used a wide variety of Machine Learning methods to analyse the training programme being provided by Babcock for the British Army. The project enabled the company to identify students who were performing above or below expectations and thus provide targeted support to reduce dropouts.  The academic supervisor for Joe’s project was Professor Joerg Fliege.
