Abstract: The Grigorchuk group is a very interesting and important example of self-similar groups (automata groups), which was introduced by R. Grigorchuk in 1980's. It possesses a lot of exotic properties which are hard to find in classical ways, including having intermediate growth, being non-elementary amenable, and being an infinite 2-group, which solved several conjectures. In my talk, I will review the history, give the explicit definition of the first Grigorchuk group, and try to offer some intuition on how to prove the properties mentioned above.
