Event details

The theory of semigroups is a relatively new area of pure mathematics (the first recorded use of this terminology having only occurred in 1904). As such, it is an area of mathematics that most are unfamiliar with. This talk aims to introduce the basic concept of semigroups as well as some of their properties that those who have only studied group theory may be unfamiliar with. This includes such properties as Green's relations which is an important property of semigroups, but is trivial in a group. We will also discuss inverse semigroups and how we define an inverse element in a set with no identity.
