Event details

Bass-Serre theory studies the structure of groups that act (interestingly) on (simplicial) trees, which turn out to be precisely the groups that ‘split’ as an amalgamated free product or an HNN extension. We’ll look at what a graph of groups is, how to find its Bass-Serre tree and we’ll see how to use these more geometric ideas to prove interesting results, such as the Kurosh Subgroup Theorem. There will be lots of pictures, and hopefully we can have some fun with these groups.
