Success for Faculty technicians at University inaugural Technicians’ Conference

Technicians from the Faculty of Medicine have been celebrated at the University of Southampton’s inaugural Technicians’ Conference.
The awards recognised excellence in the technical community across the University.
David Johnston, David Chatelet, Katie Dexter and James Thompson of the Biomedical Imaging Unit (BIU) Experimental Officer team were named winner of the Outstanding Team of the Year award, while Janice Coles picked up the Technician of the Year (Research and Enterprise) award.
The BIU is a core Faculty of Medicine facility which provides a diagnostic and research service in high quality/high resolution microscopy. The Unit is run for the benefit of, and jointly funded by, University of Southampton (UoS) and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).
The Experimental Officer team are part of a 12-member team (the remainder being NHS employees) who provide imaging service and support to Medicine and the wider University and the NHS.
During the event, Faculty technicians who have achieved Professional Registration through the Employer Champion Programme, received their awards.
James Thompson, Specialist Electron Microscopist, FMed, CSci; Dr Katie Dexter, Experimental Officer, Biomedical Imaging Unit, FMed, CSci and Kerry Spiers-Fitzgerald, Laboratory Technical Manager & RPS, Clinical and Experimental Sciences, were all presented their certificates to much applause from their technical colleagues, marking the culmination of months of hard work putting together their applications.
The Employer Champion Programme is a partnership between the Science Council and the University of Southampton, to support technical colleagues to become professionally registered.
