Able Linguist Day Event

Routes into languages
Date:

Venue:

Event details

The University of Southampton recently hosted two Able Linguist events, as part of its involvement in the Routes into Language initiative.

In June 76 Year 12 students from eight local schools and colleges attended a day experiencing the kind of lectures a languages undergraduate can expect if they come to study at Southampton and other institutions. From finding out about the Paris suburbs, to What is Linguistics? There was something to capture everyone's imagination. And for all those wanting to try something new, Portuguese and Norwegian, among other languages, were on offer too.

A week later, it was time for 129 local year 8 students from 13 schools to see what language learning at university was like. Working in teams, students designed a poster about France, Germany and Spain and then presented it to the rest of their group. This was swiftly followed by language tasters including Swedish, Bulgarian and Japanese.

Feedback from the events has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as this: "A great opportunity for the students, they thought it was useful and interesting. Thank you very much!"

It is a great response and the University, through Routes into Languages, will continue to support these activities. Two more days are planned for next year for able linguists and their parents.

Listen to the experiences of the Year 12 students.
