A scholarship fund established by Professor William Bazeyo, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for finance at Makerere University Uganda, has enabled Professor Winston Tumps Ireeta to visit the University of Southampton this week (4th – 8th November) to meet with members of the Global-NAMRIP network.

The scholarship was setup following the 2nd Global-NAMRIP Conference in Uganda earlier this year. Prof Bazeyo was so impressed by the strong delegation of Global-NAMRIP members that he proposed the special fund to enable Winston, the Head of Physics at Makerere University, to travel to the UK and to see in more detail Global-NAMRIP’s multidisciplinary approach to tackling AMR. The conference in Uganda was organised by Professor Nazarius Mbona Tumwesigye and his team at Makerere University School of Public Health.

During the visit Prof Ireeta enjoyed various facility tours including the NIHR Clinical Research Facility at Southampton General Hospital, Physics and Astronomy, the Zepler Institute, Microbiology Labs within Health Sciences and Engineering Facilities such as the Wind Tunnel and Towing Tank. Individual meetings with Global-NAMRIP members allowed for more in-depth discussion. The full programme for the week can be downloaded below.

A lunchtime event saw Global-NAMRIP members packed into the lecture room to hear Prof Ireeta give an excellent talk on “Physics Applications for AMR, The Ugandan Perspective”. Attendees also heard presentations by Prof Rob Eason and Dr Xize Niu on their innovations to help tackle AMR and an overview of Global-NAMRIP by Prof Tim Leighton.

Despite the rain, Prof Ireeta managed to see a little bit of Hampshire during his visit with a tour round the New Forest and a trip to the Great Hall and the Cathedral in Winchester.

Global-NAMRIP look forward to continuing to collaborate with Prof Ireeta, with many new links and contacts established during this visit.

Prof Ireeta commented "A great, informative and Educative Research Collaboration visit at University of Southampton. I learnt a lot in how to do things differently for the benefit of the Community around us. Thank you Prof. Timothy Leighton, Ms. Yvonne Richardson and of course the whole NAMRIP Team for the great hospitality. God Bless."
