Parliamentary Impact Programme

Are you curious about how to turn your research into real-world policy impact? Have you been interested in engaging with Parliament but aren’t sure where to start or how the process works?

Public Policy|Southampton is delighted to introduce a brand-new Parliamentary Impact Programme, designed exclusively for PhD students at the University of Southampton.

This exciting programme has been created to demystify parliamentary engagement and give you the confidence, knowledge, and tools to connect your research with policymakers.

Designed by Dr Jane Parry, UK Parliamentary Thematic Research Lead for Business and Trade, and Tiffany Withers, Parliamentary Officer at PPS, the programme offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from experts working within Parliament.

As part of the programme, you will:

  • Take part in three engaging workshops, covering Select Committee engagement, how to tailor your research for evidence, and how to have impact in Parliament
  • Visit Westminster for an immersive day touring the historical building, meeting with a panel of parliamentarians, and having the opportunity to stay and watch some live debates. The day is being sponsored by our local MP, and Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office, Satvir Kaur. PPS will cover travel expenses to Westminster.
  • Benefit from supportive spaces to develop your skills and explore how your research can influence policy

Workshop dates are Friday 1 May, Monday 18 May, and Monday 1 June.

Applications are now open and will close on Monday 30 March.

Don’t miss this opportunity to make your research matter beyond academia.

Please note, we strongly encourage applications from all disciplines and backgrounds.

If you have any questions, please contact us at publicpolicy@soton.ac.uk. Please note – we will apply flexibility around PhD status on a case by case basis.

Best wishes,
Public Policy|Southampton
