Origin
The Military Education Subcommittee reports to the Education and Student Experience Committee. It acts as a liaison committee to encourage co-operation with other service units and to support and develop the University's links with the wider defence community.
Purpose
- To report to the Education and Student Experience Committee on matters failing under the purview of the University’s Military Education Subcommittee and provide updates on the University’s Services Units and its engagement with the wider Defence community.
- The Chair is responsible for ensuring that any equality impacts against each project/policy/process/procedure have been considered as part of the decision-making process.
Responsibilities and activity
- To advise the Education and Student Experience Committee of the University of Southampton and equivalent bodies in the other universities with student members of the Service Units on matters relating to the:
- Defence STEM Undergraduate Scheme (DSUS)
- Southampton University Officer Training Corps (SUOTC)
- University Royal Navy Unit Solent (URNU-S)
- Southampton University Air Squadron (SUAS)
- To act as a liaison committee between the University and the Service Units listed.
- To encourage co-operation with other Service Units in the area.
- To receive and consider annual reports from Service Units.
- To support and develop the University’s links with the wider defence community.
Reporting arrangements
- The Military Education Subcommittee reports to the Education and Student Experience Committee.
Constitution
- Chair: appointed by the Vice President (Education & Student Experience)
- Vice President (Education & Student Experience) (or delegate)
- The Commanding Officers of the Service Units1
- One representative from each of the participating universities2
- A representative from the University of Southampton Students’ Union (or delegated SUSU Officer)
- Co-opted member(s) as required or appropriate3
Each Commanding Officer may invite one student representative from their Unit to attend.

Quorum and frequency
Quorum
The Military Education Subcommittee will be quorate with one third of the membership plus one in attendance.
Frequency of meetings
The Military Education Subcommittee will meet at least once per year.
