Inspire Medicine - Southampton

About us

“INSPIRE is a UK-wide initiative, driven by the Academy of Medical Sciences, to engage medical and dental undergraduates with research. The University of Southampton is pleased to support the INSPIRE programme and to encourage all of our medical students to learn more about research and the impact that this has on improving clinical care.”

INSPIRE is a national initiative coordinated by the Academy of Medical Sciences and funded by the Wellcome Trust. It aims to enthuse more medical students about research, and encourage them to pursue research in their own careers.

Our own programme of events aims to provide Southampton medical students with the opportunity to engage in research from an early stage, in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

The research taster sessions which are run every 3-4 weeks give students a snapshot into some of the research occurring within our own medical school, while other events such as the annual showcase welcome external speakers for students to hear about medical research across the UK. In addition, our Journal Clubs and “How to” series give a platform for students to learn the key skills needed for research and critical appraisal of journals. We also welcome suggestions of other events from the rest of the faculty.

We want to provide you with the events and talks that will benefit you! So don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us know of areas you would like to see us expand into. This includes collaborating with other medical societies on events with a research theme – with our large database of academics, we can help you to source speakers, provide advice on organising an event and help with manpower on the actual day.

The INSPIRE team are looking forward to the exciting programme of events this year and we look forward to welcoming you to one soon.
