All next week (6-10 February), the University of Southampton is showcasing how its research is helping to solve some of today’s big global issues such as climate change, energy, the ageing population, high-tech crime and lifestyle diseases.
Multidisciplinary Research Week is a programme of activities aimed at highlighting different aspects of multidisciplinary work at the University, which brings together research from the arts, humanities and social sciences with methods drawn from mathematics, engineering or the physical sciences to develop innovative solutions.
Highlights of the week include the opening lecture from Dr Peter White‚ Director of Global Sustainability at Procter & Gamble‚ a keynote lecture from Dr Lucy Blue‚ Maritime Archaeologist and presenter of BBC’s Oceans series on Wednesday and the finale on Friday with Dr James Dyke speaking on Global Challenges at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.
Throughout the week there will also be an exciting programme of presentations, exhibitions, talks and seminars about ground-breaking research, including a live demonstration of how academics are pioneering a new way of using motion capture technology to examine the way pianists play the piano.
Professor Guy Poppy, Director of Multidisciplinary Research Strategy, says: “In order to tackle today’s big societal issues we must develop innovative approaches that bridge conventional boundaries between research disciplines.
“By joining up our exciting and diverse areas of research and by partnering with external organisations in industry, charities, the public sector and other higher education establishments, we can make a significant contribution towards understanding and alleviating some of society’s major challenges.”
The University of Southampton has established 13 multidisciplinary research groups that build on its current areas of expertise. Each group draws together researchers from across the University, combining research in engineering, social sciences,biological and physical sciences, medicine and health technologies, as well as law, management and art, to address key national and international priority research areas.
