Ocean and Earth Science Open Days July 2013
As always, we had a fantastic two days at our summer open days at Ocean and Earth Science, Southampton at the National Oceanography Centre (NOCS). The turnout was great and we had some wonderful feedback from the students who attended. It always helps when the sun is shining but the weather was particularly good for seeing NOCS at its very best this weekend.
All of our undergraduate courses are represented at our open days, with presentations and practical activities. Students were able to look around the laboratories, speak to lecturers, find out about the modules, field-work and possible career pathways. They were also able to find out more about student finance and the application process, visit the student accommodation and join one of our guided campus tours both at NOCS waterfront campus and the Highfield campus.
The open day tours at NOCS are expertly led by our student ambassadors and provided the students with the opportunity to see all the teaching facilities, the extensive NOC library, the social areas and just how uniquely positioned our waterfront campus is. The student ambassadors provided valuable first-hand advice on programme options, the benefits of studying at NOCS and the experience they have gained since being at Southampton. As well as their own plans for the future.
Dr Antony Jensen, senior lecturer and admission tutor for Marine Biology, presented the Oceanography and Marine Biology talk. ‘The open day at the NOC was a great success, the sun shone and lots of people came to talk about our degrees. Our lecture theatre was full to overflowing with enthusiastic, prospective students. As admissions tutors both Ian Harding and I judge an open day by the state of our voices at the end of day 2 and I know that mine was down to a mere croak! A truly successful couple of days meeting some great prospective ocean and Earth science students'

After extensive research and plenty of university open days the only oceanography course that jumped out at me was at the University of Southampton.
There is a strong sense of energy and excitement buzzing around at NOCS. It is great and very inspiring to study amongst world-renowned scientists.
