Event details

On the 16 January 2014 the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOC) will be hosting the next in its series of Marine Manufacturer’s ‘Breakfast Club’ meetings. At this Breakfast Club meeting Kevin Forshaw will be talking about the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute (SMMI) at the University of Southampton.

SMMI brings together over 500 researchers active in marine and maritime research.  Since its launch last January, it has engaged with numerous local companies on collaborative research and development projects, and this presentation will summarise how the University can engage with business, highlighting some of the case studies to date.

Breakfast will be served from 08:30 with the presentation beginning at approximately 09:15.  The room is available before and after the presentation for free format networking giving an opportunity for industry to meet and network with NOC staff and take part in opportunistic discussions, whilst enjoying breakfast and a coffee.

The Club is free to attend and meets twice yearly, if you would like to attend this event please contact Aidan Thorn (aidan.thorn@noc.ac.uk)

Speaker Information:

Mr Kevin Forshaw: Industry Liaison - Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute.

Kevin's engagement with the maritime sector started 14 years ago when he established and ran a Marine Thematic Group from a European Commission Funded Innovation Relay Centre Office that had a membership of 11 organisations from 9 different member states of Europe. At this time, Kevin was also responsible for promoting the then European Commission Fifth Framework Programme to maritime business in the South of England.

Since then, Kevin has worked for 4 universities where he has set up collaborative projects that have leveraged in excess of £12M of Government support for companies within the UK. This activity has included the setting up of over 80 KTP projects and building consortia for numerous European Commission and Technology Strategy Board funded collaborative research projects.

Kevin is an active member of the Marine Industries Leadership Council, Technology and Innovation Group, the European Council for Maritime Applied Research and recently became a member of the British Marine Federation South Executive Committee. His role is to ease the process for companies to access the wealth of world-leading support available from the University. He also campaigns on behalf of the maritime sector to ensure that it receives the support it requires from both the UK National and Regional Government and the European Commission, to remain competitive and to tackle the grand maritime challenges going forward.
