Two Permanent Faculty Positions
Two permanent faculty positions are available in the Astronomy group at the University of Southampton, at the level of Lecturer or Associate Professor (equivalent to Senior Lecturer or Reader).
The Astronomy group at Southampton is one of the world's leading groups in the study of high energy astrophysics, accretion, compact objects and variability, with particular emphasis on time domain astronomy. We are also prominent in extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. We are key players in the next-generation of radio telescopes, eg SKA, LOFAR, eMERLIN, and are the UK lead institute for the INTEGRAL Gamma-ray observatory. We are also involved in other future high energy observatories such as LOFT (X-rays) and CTA (TeV). We seek exceptional candidates, either observational or theoretical, who will extend and enhance our research portfolio.
The group has a strong record of research grant funding, eg from the European Research Council, STFC, NERC, the Royal Society and including Marie Curie and ESO fellowships. The group has eleven permanent academic staff (plus two visiting professors), fourteen postdoctoral fellows and approximately twenty PhD students, as well as a dedicated outreach fellow. We are amongst the most cited Astronomy groups in the UK.
The Astronomy group is part of the School of Physics & Astronomy which is ranked as a world top-30 Physics department. We are part of the larger Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering which brings together fundamental physics research with one of the UK's largest and strongest computer science departments. We are also part of the new STAG Research Centre (Southampton Theory, Astrophysics and Gravity, 33 staff) which combines researchers across Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Ian McHardy (imh@soton.ac.uk).
