Title: Quantum Chaos and Effective Field Theory

Abstract: After reviewing aspects of thermalization and chaos in holographic systems, I will argue that universal aspects can be captured using an effective field theory framework that shares similarities with hydrodynamics. Focusing on the quantum butterfly effect, I will demonstrate how to develop a simple effective theory of the 'scramblon'. After discussing maximally chaotic examples, I will turn to a particular system that displays sub-maximal chaos and discuss its effective description. Finally, I will mention progress on the spatial propagation of more fine-grained chaos characteristics, in particular spectral correlations.
