Title: On the nature of normal modes of oscillation of proto-neutron stars

Abstract: In this talk, I will describe recent work aimed at understanding the oscillation modes excited in the coupled system formed by the proto-neutron star and the accretion shock during core-collapse supernovae. Core-collapse supernovae are among the most exciting sources expected for future detections by gravitational-wave interferometers, and they offer a unique multi-messenger opportunity through the combined emission of gravitational waves, neutrinos, and electromagnetic radiation. I will focus on the current understanding of gravitational-wave signals from core collapse and discuss how they can be modelled in terms of normal oscillation modes of proto-neutron stars excited during the post-bounce phase, prior to the onset of the explosion. The observation of such modes with detectors such as LIGO and Virgo may allow us to infer key properties of proto-neutron stars and to learn about the physical mechanisms powering supernova explosions.
