A one-day networking workshop for researchers working in the field of aircraft noise and aeroacoustics will be hosted by the Centre for Aviation, Transport, and the Environment at Manchester Metropolitan University on Wednesday 2nd April 2014. This workshop will enable researchers in the UK to meet and exchange information about their current work, and the event will be a showcase for current research on aircraft noise and aeroacoustics in the UK.

At the start of the workshop, the keynote talk on industrial needs for aircraft noise research will be given by Dr Nick Humphreys from Rolls-Royce plc.
The workshop is primarily targeted at postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers. It will provide an opportunity for early career researchers to present their work to their peers at an informal setting, and for the participants to receive an overview of current research in aircraft noise and aeroacoustics in the UK, covering a range of technical areas. A forum for a European level overview of jet noise is provided through the participation of the Integrated Training Network AeroTraNet 2.

Participants are invited to give a short presentation on their work. There will be three technical sessions at the workshop. Presenters will have a maximum of 15 minutes for their presentation and questions. Presenters are reminded that the workshop is an open forum, so confidential material should not be included in their presentation.
The workshop will be held at Manchester Metropolitan University ALL SAINTS Campus, John Dalton Building, room E 002.
All Saints Campus is situated close to Manchester's city centre. The John Dalton Building is situated on the corner of Chester Street and Oxford Road (Postcode M1 5GD).
The workshop will start at 10.30am and finish at 5.15pm. During the event light refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please specify any dietary requirements on the registration form.
CATE (Centre for Aviation, Transport, and the Environment) is an internationally-recognized centre of expertise concerned with the environmental impacts arising from transport and mobility. CATE is part of the Manchester Metropolitan University. Research is conducted for governmental, UN Agency and industry customers on issues as diverse as: community noise disturbance, emissions measurements and modelling; modelling of global climate impacts; biofuels; airport environmental capacity and its management, carbon management and climate change adaptation strategies.
Staff at the centre have been called upon to advise the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UK Government, the European Commission, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the World Meteorological Organization, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Airports Council International, the UK Committee on Climate Change and others.
CATE also provides training to industry and government bodies across the World and runs undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of aviation environmental management and the sustainability of air transport.
CATE staff have been involved in X-Noise from the beginning, working mainly on noise management and ICAO Balanced Approach.
X-Noise is a European collaborative network of industrial, SMEs, university and research organizations working in the field of aircraft noise research. The network was formed originally in 1998, and is led by SNECMA. This industry-led consortium plays a major consultative role in setting the agenda for aircraft noise research in Europe, the current focus being the aircraft noise challenge set by the ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe) 2020 vision. There have been over 25 European funded projects linked to aircraft noise which have been organized under the auspices of X-Noise during the last decade.
The X-Noise United Kingdom Network in Aeroacoustics, is one of a group of national networks set up under the auspices of X-Noise to coordinate research activities in aircraft noise at a national level. This UK network, coordinated by the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton, has nine university partners, and industry partners including Bombardier Shorts, QinetiQ, as well as Airbus UK and Rolls–Royce. The key objectives of this network is the coordination of activities at a national level, including to inform national partners of strategic research priorities, to promote new collaborations, to share information on proposal activities, and to disseminate information on national research activities in aircraft noise.
AeroTraNet is a European consortium of higher-education institutions and industry aimed at training the next generation of unsteady aerodynamic and aero-acoustic engineers for the European Research Area. First established in 2006, AeroTraNet 1 trained 15 PhD students in 2006-2010 under FP6. AeroTraNet 2 is supporting 9 PhDs and 2 post-doctoral students between 2012-2016 under FP7. The consortium operates as an Integrated Training Network under the Marie Curie Actions for the training and mobility of researchers. Partners include Airbus France, Alstom, Universities of Leicester, Greenwich, Toulouse, Roma Tre, and the research institutes of Cerfacs, VKI, and Insean. Training in experimental, numerical, and analytical methods for jet noise is hosted in Belgium, France, Italy, and in the UK. The key objective of this network is to integrate the European graduate training offer in unsteady aerodynamics and noise.
