The Industry Doctoral Training Centre (IDTC) in Transport and the Environment is one of 44 centres for doctoral training established by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).   The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Programme offered by the IDTC builds upon the acclaimed EngD in ‘Transport Infrastructure Knowledge and Systems’ which started in 1999.  Research in the IDTC focuses on the inter-relationship between 'Transport and the Environment'.

For an overview of the EngD Programme see the IDTC EngD flyer (pdf).

For details of the Programme see the IDTC EngD Programme Manual (pdf).

The Engineering Doctorate combines the intellectual challenge of a PhD with taught courses from the Southampton Executive MBA Programme and commercial experience gained through conducting research in collaboration with an industrial sponsor.

There are currently 39 Southampton EngD students with more than 50 students having graduated since the start of the Programme in 2000.  There are up to 10 studentships per year allocated by competition for an October start each year.

Sponsoring companies range in size from multi-nationals to University spin-outs and Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).  Many companies sponsor several students and seek new recruits each year.

The Schools historically involved in the EngD Programme are Civil Engineering and the Environment, Electronics and Computer Science, Engineering Sciences, the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research and Management.

Projects in the IDTC may come from any of the Schools in the Faculty of Engineering, Science & Mathematics (FESM) or the School of Management.
