Leading through change: Practical systems thinking for business challenges

On 13–14 April, we welcomed delegates to our Executive Education course in Systems Thinking and Leadership Development. This intensive two-day programme offered participants a deep dive into both the theory and practice of systems thinking, equipping them with practical tools to navigate complexity and lead more effectively in today’s interconnected world.

On the first day, Professor Jeni Giambona (Associate Dean of Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise, University of Southampton Business School) introduced the core principles of systems thinking, with a focus on adopting a whole-systems perspective. Delegates explored key concepts such as defining systems and system boundaries, feedback loops and interdependencies as well as systems mapping identifying patterns, and appreciating how organisations are complex systems.

The day also provided an introduction to systems leadership, with interactive exercises designed to connect theory with real organisational challenges. Delegates brought a wealth of experience from a wide range of sectors, enriching discussions and contributing actively to the learning process.

On Day 2, our Leaders and Entrepreneurs in Residence, Nassar Majothi (Director of Systems Integration, HS2) and Tim Whitcher (Technical Director, AtkinsRealis)   brought systems thinking to life through practical, real-world examples drawn from their leadership and entrepreneurial journeys. Nassar and Tim shared a number of techniques and frameworks they apply in their day-to-day leadership roles.

Through facilitated group activities and discussions, participants had the opportunity to explore systems leadership in action and apply practical tools to complex scenarios, deepening their understanding of how systems thinking can support better decision-making and organisational resilience.
The course marked the beginning of participants’ journey to leading in a complex world where systems thinking is a core leadership skill. It laid a strong foundation for navigating complexity, equipping leaders with the mindset and tools needed to apply systems thinking in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic environment.
