Confucius Institute hosts Chinese Tea Culture workshops
On September 7 2024, the Confucius Institute (CI) hosted two Chinese Tea Culture workshops at the John Hansard Gallery.
Each workshop included a lecture on tea culture, a tea art performance and tasting, a chopstick workshop, and a display of tea sets.
Ms. Ying Fu, the senior teacher at the CI, wore a qipao adorned with porcelain patterns to deliver the lecture on tea culture. She used images and tea samples to bring the story of tea to life.
Her lecture explored the origins, processing methods, and health benefits of various Chinese teas. These included black, white, green, and yellow teas.
Pu’er, Tie Guanyin, and Jasmine teas were available to observe and smell. These specialist teas further promoted understanding and appreciation of Chinese tea culture.
The tea art performance, led by Miss Yutian Hu, highlighted the elegance of Chinese tea artistry. Her meticulous movements, from warming the teapot to tasting the tea, displayed deep respect and passion for tea tradition.
The serene atmosphere and enticing aroma transported the audience to an ancient Chinese tea house. After the performance, they enjoyed the distinctive flavours of the brewed teas.
Mr. Tao Peng led the chopstick-use workshop. He explained techniques and guided participants on proper use. Thanks to his patient instruction, everyone was able to master the skill and handle small objects with ease. Participants enjoyed learning in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere.
