European grant will boost Southampton research on metal-air batteries for vehicles

Published: 20 December 2012

Senior Lecturer in Engineering Sciences, Dr Carlos Ponce de Leon has been awarded a grant of 370,000 euros from the European Commission to further his research to develop a metal-air redox-flow battery for vehicles.

Professor Frank Walsh and Dr Richard Wills, also from Southampton, will be co-investigators on the three-year NECOBAUT project, which involves other European universities and industry partners.

This new battery concept is based on new metal/air technology that overcomes the energy density limitations of the lithium ion battery used at present in some electrical vehicles.  It has attracted attention from the automotive industry as the batteries are lightweight, can be manufactured at low cost and the materials used can be recycled.

A PhD student and a postdoc researcher will join the team for the project.
