Smart communities project: building momentum for data-driven impact

Our “Smart Solutions for Communities and Places” programme continues to make significant strides in empowering place-leaders with standards-based tools to drive measurable impact. Since its launch, we’ve completed two classroom-based training sessions for new PAS184 practitioners, marking an exciting step forward in building a regional network of experts equipped to lead data-led initiatives for community prosperity, resilience, and sustainability.

Our trainee practitioners learn about the ‘three smarts’ central to the success of projects and embedded within the assessment methodology: smart thinking, smart practices and smart measurement.

In addition to these training sessions, we’re pleased to share the completion of our first PAS184-based case study, with Emma Shelby of Signal Bordon, which offered insights into implementing data-driven approaches in a real-world setting. This case study represents a valuable resource, providing practical examples and learnings that will inform future projects.

Looking ahead, we are preparing case studies in collaboration with three more of our external stakeholders: an architecture practice, local authority, and a place-based community group. These partnerships will help deepen our understanding of diverse challenges across sectors and refine our standards-based approach. Together, we aim to enhance project outcomes and support our community’s journey toward sustainability and resilience.
