Professor Steve Darby elected Fellow of the British Society for Geomorphology

Professor Steve Darby has been elected as a Fellow of the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG).

The BSG is the professional British organisation for geomorphologists.  The society aims to advance the science of geomorphology, providing a community and services for those involved in geomorphological teaching, research or practice and promoting wider understanding of the discipline.

Fellows of the BSG are members of the Society who have made significant contributions to the advancement of geomorphology through, for example, refereed research publications, professional practice which has produced influential reports and recommendations, influential pedagogic advances in learning and teaching, or service to the activities of the BSG.

Professor Darby is internationally recognised for his work on river morphodynamics, with particular emphasis on bank erosion, river channel migration, suspended sediment transport, and river–climate interactions. His modelling frameworks for bank stability, sediment transport, and meander evolution are widely used globally and have reshaped understanding of river processes in both academic research and applied geomorphology.

He has previously served as a Trustee of the BSG and was its Chair from 2017 – 2018.

A Professor of Physical Geography and Associate Dean - Research in the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences (FELS), Professor Darby said: “I was absolutely delighted and very honoured to become part of the BSG fellowship, particularly given the calibre of the other geomorphologists on the list.

“The honour is especially meaningful to me because the BSG has played such an important part in my own development and professional life, starting with the Windsor Training workshop that I took as a new PhD student back in December 1990 and all the way through to my own time serving the Society as its Chair.”

Steve was awarded his Fellowship by Professor Steve Rice, the President of the BSG, at the Society’s AGM in Lincoln.

There are currently around 60 Fellows of the BSG , including a number of University of Southampton alumni and Emeritus Professors.

Members of the BSG can put forward nominations for the Fellowships.

Steve’s nomination for BSG Fellowship said: “Through his world-leading research, sustained disciplinary leadership, high-impact applied geomorphology, and exemplary service to the BSG, Professor Stephen Darby meets and exceeds all criteria for election as a Fellow of the British Society for Geomorphology.

"His election would recognise a career that has profoundly influenced geomorphological science and practice and continues to contribute to its future direction.”
