Around 200 first year nursing students had the chance to practice their clinical skills during a newly introduced simulation week.

Across the week, students were involved in a range of simulated care scenarios, working with actors who played the role of patients.

The activities gave students the chance to practice various approaches in a safe and controlled environment, including their clinical and communication skills.

The first simulation week took place in December to help prepare students for their initial clinical placements in January.

Simulation weeks have been introduced as part of a new revalidated curriculum in response to feedback from stakeholders including students, practice partners, and those who use health and care services.

Dr Chris Allen , Principal Teaching Fellow in Adult Nursing, Nursing, Midwifery and Health, said: “The simulation weeks were introduced as a way to increase our experiential learning offer and better prepare students for clinical practice.

“Students have fed back that the week was highly valuable and that, as a result, they feel better prepared for their first clinical practice.”
